CPhI North America is dedicated to achieving sustainable commercial success through thoughtful market focus and superior results for our customers. Being a sustainable business is central to how we run our events, how we make decisions and how we do business every day. Our continuing evolution is fueled by insight, innovation, and collaboration. We are proud of our commitment to having a positive environmental and social impact on both the communities and industries we work within.

At CPhI North America and our parent company, UBM, we have identified six main areas of focus for delivering a sustainable event. The below sets out CPhI North America’s overarching aim and key achievements or each of our six key areas.

Carbon Mitigation

Our aim: is to reduce the carbon impact of our events by 11.4% by 2020. By doing this we reduce our contribution to climate change and its effects.

What we are doing:

  • We use only energy efficient AV equipment and LED lighting during our speaker sessions and at our booths.
  • We calculate the event’s carbon impact to track progress and identify areas for improvement.
  • We work with our venue to ensure we are as efficient as possible with our energy use.

Stakeholder Engagement

Our aim: is to engage everyone involved in our events with both what we are doing, and what they can do to increase the sustainability of our events.

What we are doing:

  • We Guide our exhibitors and visitors on how they can help improve the sustainability of the event.

Material Use & Waste Management

Our aim: is for everything to be either reused or recycled at the end of the show, therefore reducing both the amount of resources we use and the waste we create.

What we are doing:

  • In 2017, we increased our diversion rate to 67% and consistently looking for ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.
  • We work with our contractors to return building materials and carpeting back into inventory and recycled what can’t be used again.
  • We carefully design our feature areas such as the Insight Briefing Theater and the Exhibitor Showcase Theater so that they create minimal waste.

Community & Charitable Giving

Our aim: is for all of our events to have an industry relevant charity partner, so that we support our community and ensure that our events have a positive legacy.

What we are doing:

  • We support International Medical Corps by connecting them with organizations that can provide lifesaving health and medical services.

Procurement

Our aim: is to look at the economic, environmental and social aspect of all of our purchases, to ensure the products and services we use help us achieve a sustainable event.

What we are doing:

  • 100% of our printing is done on paper sourced from sustainably managed forests that follow FSC standards.
  • We’ve replaced foam core signage with signage made from 100% recycled cardboard substrate.
  • Our carpeting is made from recycled materials, reducing our carbon footprint and the demand for virgin materials.

Health & Safety

Our aim: is to ensure the safety of all onsite through implementing best practice health and safety processes.

What we are doing:

  • Leading the events industry in the implementation of health and safety.
